Oddly, neither the CD front cover nor the title “Virtuoso Violin” indicates that this is an all-Spanish program. What’s important, however, is that these 1972-80 recordings represent Itzhak Perlman at his technical and expressive apogee. In the two Sarasate violin-with-orchestra showpieces that bookend the collection, Perlman’s passionate phrasing, warm tone, and effortless technique make for a joyous listening experience. Similarly, the Falla, Granados, Halffter, and Albéniz selections all benefit from the violinist’s idiomatic eloquence and the rhythmic élan with which he points up melodies. With EMI’s still-vibrant sound quality, 79 minutes of playing time, and budget price (plus Perlman on prime form), how can you go wrong? [3/22/2003]
