Puccini: Tosca, Parma ’61/Corelli

Robert Levine

Artistic Quality:

Sound Quality:

This is the same performance I reviewed on Myto (for my comments, type Q6665 in Search Reviews). The sound quality is essentially the same (it must be played somewhat louder than the Myto), and the performance by Franco Corelli remains riveting. This new release also offers the encore Corelli gave of “Core ‘ngrato” that Myto claimed to have included but did not; in fact, Bel Canto includes two versions of both “Core ‘ngrato” and “E lucevan le stelle” taken from two different tape sources (for the obsessive). With that addition, this becomes the version of choice–but the point is, if you’re arguing about the visceral effect of tenors, this Tosca is an argument settler.
