Braga Santos 3 STRAUSS C

David Hurwitz

Artistic Quality:

Sound Quality:

Braga Santos’ Third Symphony sounds like a cross between Vaughan Williams and Respighi. Its modal themes and luscious orchestration make it one of the most appealing works of the 20th century, and its neglect is inexplicable. If you want to have some fun, play the third movement of this work right after listening to the Scherzo (also the third movement) of Vaughan Williams’ “Pastoral” Symphony. It’s a clear case of an affectionate tribute from one composer to another, and not a matter of plagiarism. In any event this symphony, coupled with the Symphony No. 6, already has been released by Marco Polo in a version that features this same conductor. This performance offers slightly better playing; the Marco Polo offers better sound and more music. The choice is yours, but do get to know this lovely work.
