If you want to hear Bach’s three cello sonatas interpreted with heartfelt phrasing and stylistic surety that never becomes self-conscious, you’ve come to the right disc. With virtually glicth-free intonation, Simca Heled directs his warm, communicative cello sonority towards dance-like ends, abetted by Edward Brewer’s inventive, unfailingly supportive harpsichord continuo. Adam Abeshouse’s production captures their wonderful music making in superbly balanced sound. Nothing unusually fancy or overtly scholarly here, except for two seasoned players clearly enjoying each other’s company. Brewer’s program notes cogently outline the music’s salient features in language that both musicians and laymen will understand. Highly recommended.
