Puccini: Boheme Excerpts/Scotto, Poggi

Robert Levine

Sound Quality:

Fifty-six of the best minutes from Bohème are presented here, conducted with general impassiveness by Antonino Votto and sung so hideously by a strained, nasty-sounding Gianni Poggi as Rodolfo that it’s amazing he had any career at all. Furthermore the normally wonderful Tito Gobbi as Marcello sounds as if he is in serious need of a rest and as if he can’t stand the rest of the cast: he snarls dryly for emphasis. Someone named Jolanda Meneguzzer (which must be an alias) is a Musetta of personality and solidity if not distinction. Only Renata Scotto fans will want this: Her Mimi is distinguished and understated, and in 1961 when this was recorded, her voice was in ideal condition. She brings great nuance to both of her arias and paints quite a touching portrait. If that’s good enough for you, then buy this. I can’t think of another reason to own it–other than to use as a coaster. [2/11/2000]
