Sullivan: Gondoliers excerpts

Robert Levine

This is the type of sampler I loved when I first began collecting recordings: It offers more than half the complete operetta, including both finales and almost every delicious song, duet, and ensemble. In short, unless you have a passion for dialogue, overtures, and completeness, this CD is ideal for you. Add to that the definitive performances here (John Reed’s Duke of Plaza-Toro should be in a museum) and not-at-all-bad 40-year-old sound, and you’ve got a winner. [2/12/2000]
