Hänsel und Gretel/Karajan

Sound Quality:

This classic recording of Humperdinck’s beloved children’s opera weathers its near half-century-old sonics well. While nothing can change a recorded balance that places the opulent orchestra in back of the ever-present singers, there’s greater weight and presence to the overall sound than what is heard in earlier LP and CD transfers. The two Elisabeths bring both simplicity and sophistication to the protagonists, and Else Schürhoff’s delightfully characterized Witch floats across Humperdinck’s Wagnerian-tinged scoring with delectable ease. Anny Felbermayer does double duty as the Sandman and Dew Fairy, and gorgeously at that. Lastly, Karajan’s colorful, supportive leadership is abetted by the Philharmonia Orchestra, captured in their finest fettle. If you don’t mind mono, this is the Hansel and Gretel to have, and full texts and translations are included.
