This 50 minutes of Fledermaus in a mediocre English translation is not apt to genuinely please anyone except fans of Anna Moffo, who delivers a lovely, lively Rosalinde, and Jeanette Scovotti, delightful as Adele. Richard Lewis is a weak Eisenstein (it’s easy to see why light baritones have taken the part over in recent years) and the opera-singing Alfred of Sergio Franchi is an unintentional joke. Risë Stevens sounds almost voiceless as Orlovsky and George London’s Falke is too Scarpia-like for comfort. The orchestra and chorus play with great verve for Oscar Danon, and RCA’s engineers have remastered the analog sound superbly. But for the most part, this is a dud.
