This well-filled disc offers a generous sampling of Boccherini’s cello concertos in marvelous performances by Wen-Sinn Yang. The concertos are exceptional examples of late Baroque/early Classical concertante writing, with solo parts that are as captivating as they are challenging. However, Yang certainly is up to the task as he plays beautifully throughout, tossing off the virtuoso runs of No. 2 and No. 10 with seeming ease, while rendering the delicate slow movements of Nos. 3 and 9 with a fine sensitivity. Much of this impression is due to the wonderfully burnished tone Yang conjures from his instrument, which is decently captured by the closely-miked though slightly boxy recording. If Boccherini cello concertos are your thing, here’s a release certain to satisfy your interest.
