This is one of the best-ever recordings of Rodrigo’s Guitar Concertos. Mercury’s engineers achieved a rare balance between soloist and orchestra in which the guitar doesn’t so dominate the acoustic that the orchestra sounds far in the distance (as is the case on some other recordings). This lends the sound a fullness and presence that is most welcome in this music. The performances are simply gorgeous, with the Romeros showcasing a confident virtuosity and romantic sensitivity that reflects their considerable experience with Rodrigo’s work. The Romeros bring these same qualities, as well as a refined elegance, to the Vivaldi concertos (transcribed for guitar). Conductor Victor Alessandro keeps the accompaniments fresh and lively, avoiding the sappy mannerisms that have marred other performances of the Concierto de Aranjuez. The SACD’s enhanced fidelity makes this 1967 recording sound surprisingly modern (that is, if you overlook the tape hiss). If you don’t own a recording of this music, this one is all you’ll need.
