Humperdinck: Hansel und Gretel

This highlight disc cuts about 30 minutes from the opera–orchestral bits, the Father’s entrance aria, and a small portion of the last act–but what we’re left with is magnificent. Jeffrey Tate presents this opera so honestly and with such ease and warmth that it seems new, and his cast is the best on CD. Anne Sofie von Otter’s way of emphasizing phrases to seem like a sturdy, impetuous little boy is just right, and Barbara Bonney’s Gretel is light as air. Marjana Lipovsek works her way around the witch’s music with glee, wheedling and cajoling and positively scary. Hanna Schwarz’s Mother is correctly impatient, and what’s left of the Father’s part is affectionately sung by Andreas Schmidt. Barbara Hendricks’ Sandman is a role she’s perfect for (the only one I can think of); Eva Lind’s Dew Fairy is sweet and pure. Tempos are on the fast side. Remarkably, this highlight CD somehow doesn’t make you miss much; however, the whole opera, which I believe is still available, is preferable. But for those who want only highlights, this is top-of-the-line. [1/24/2005]
