Gordon Fergus-Thompson’s complete Debussy solo piano cycle for ASV may be the most consistent in quality among modern editions, and this attractively packaged, budget-priced set from Sanctuary Classics is most welcome. The pianist’s robust, colorful sonority and sensitive phrasing perfectly suit this alluring, atmospheric repertoire. His measured tempos for the Preludes allow him to savor the resonances without lingering longer than he should, while his ample virtuosity in note-spinners like the Toccata, Jardins sous la pluie, Mouvement, and L’Isle joyeuse makes priorities of such details as articulation and breathing room. Some listeners may feel Claire de lune and Serenade for the doll are overly studied and rounded-off, yet they still hold your attention. Fergus-Thompson’s superb double-note technique in the second, third, and fourth Etudes compensates for misread rhythms in Nos. 7 and 11, and the solidly played shorter works offer no cause for critical nitpicking. Listeners primarily interested in specific works will want more individually compelling recordings like Michelangeli’s Images, Jacobs’ Preludes, and Uchida’s Etudes. Still, the present release’s sonic, interpretive, and budgetary virtues add up to a positive recommendation.
