Holiday Classic From Seattle

This is not by any means a new recording; in fact, it was the debut disc, released in 1995, of the Seattle Girls’ Choir, which was founded in 1982 by Jerome Wright. But a recording–and performances–of this caliber deserves attention no matter its age. If you are a fan of Christmas choral music–or of choral music in general, and treble choirs in particular–you shouldn’t miss this exceptional program, for its interesting selection of works and above all for the polished, professional quality of the singing.

The music ranges from Kodály (The Angels and the Shepherds) to Brahms (Regina Coeli Op. 37 No. 3), plus a few Rutter pieces and featuring a first-rate rendition of Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols. There are several works by lesser-known composers and arrangers–all excellent, including what for me is among the highlights: the very expressive and deeply moving Mary Speaks, by composer Daniel Gawthrop, set to a text by Madeleine L’Engle. You won’t forget this one.

You probably know the popular Christmas song Carol of the Bells, in the choir arrangement by Peter Wilhousky, but here we not only get that version, but also the version in the original Ukrainian, titled Shchedryk. It’s not about bells, but tells the story of a swallow, flying about, singing about the promise of prosperity in the coming year. It’s a stunning performance (only a minute and twenty seconds long!), especially meaningful today as the Ukrainian children’s choir, also named Shchedryk, celebrates its 50th year, touring the world against the extreme difficulties, deprivations, and dangers inflicted by the appalling war that continues in their homeland. (You can find recent performances from their tour on YouTube.)

For me, there’s no such thing as too many Christmas recordings, but this is one that remains among my top 25, one that demands several listens each holiday season, and, especially for the Britten and Mary Speaks, at other times as well. Highly recommended.
