This CD presents two of Stravinsky’s neo-classical works for orchestra, plus several solo piano pieces. The Pucinella Suite is seldom recorded these days–most performers opt for the complete work, a reversal from times past. Herbert Kegel’s reading is lively and graceful, catching the spirit of the Pergolesi originals as well as the quirkiness of Stravinsky’s arrangements. The orchestral playing is not always top notch, however, especially from the woodwinds, and every flaw is cruelly exposed by the microscopic recording. No one really drops any notes, but you always have the feeling that this orchestra is playing as well as it can, with nothing in reserve. This feeling continues in the performance of the Capriccio, and pianist Peter Rösel’s playing seems labored and lackluster. This soloist also seems a bit dull in the solo works, which require some significant flair in order to impress. Spirited and serviceable is the watchword for Pulcinella, cautious and reserved for the other works.
