November 28, 2013—The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra today launches its new RCO Editions iPhone app. The app enables subscribers to view and listen to all RCO Editions concert recordings, even on the go. The RCO Editions iPhone app is an extension of the RCO Editions iPad video magazine, which has been downloaded more than 15,000 times since it was launched on 18 September.
With RCO Editions, the RCO offers concert recordings to the public in a new, innovative way thanks to the dual screen player, designed especially for the orchestra. Music lovers can view concerts on the iPad while watching synchronised video commentary by the conductor, reading articles about the work or following along in the score. Starting today, individual concert recordings are also available on the iPhone. Non-subscribers can still listen to RCO radio for free with the iPhone app.
The latest release of RCO Editions (issue #3) features Alban Berg’s Altenberg Lieder and Zemlinsky’s Maeterlinck Lieder, both sung by Anne Sofie von Otter and accompanied by commentary from conductor David Robertson. Also featured are Zemlinsky’s Die Seejungfrau, Webern’s Sechs Orchesterstücke and Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 – all placed in the context of Vienna in 1913.
Issue #4 is due for release on 16 January 2014 and will focus on Russian repertoire featuring a wealth of performances and commentary from conductors Vladimir Jurowski, John Eliot Gardiner, Mariss Jansons, Andris Nelsons, and pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk. Complementing these are articles written by renowned musicologists Richard Taruskin andSjeng Scheijen.
