This second volume from the Trinity College Choir containing the motets of 16th century Dutch composer Jan Sweelinck is every bit as musically worthy, well-performed, and expertly recorded as its companion (Hyperion 67103). For most listeners, this program will be a journey of discovery, given the fact that Sweelinck’s choral music is pathetically sparse on disc. Nevertheless, the trip is certain to be a pleasurable one: Sweelinck’s motets prove to be some of the most sublime examples of late Renaissance vocal music. There’s passion and reverence, gentleness and strength in these powerfully expressive pieces, brought to full realization in the ideal context of Trinity College Choir’s acclaimed ensemble technique and lovely choral tone.
