Tchaikovsky & Mussorgsky: Sym No. 4 & Pictures/Sokhiev

Recordings of Tchaikovsky symphonies are appearing less frequently since the great major label implosion of a few years ago, and the upside is that we can once again approach new releases with interest, and even anticipation. Conductor Tugan Sokhiev’s light, sinewy reading gives the impression of a fresh approach to this warhorse work. He elicits bold if not particularly brazen sounds from the Toulouse orchestra brass in the dramatic opening and throughout the first movement–especially the close, where I was once again reminded that this is pretty scary music. He achieves this effect not only by energetic tempos, but also by highlighting the harmonic tension Tchaikovsky built into the score, and by taking great care with the music’s unique timbral characteristics (woodwinds in particular).

The finale generates much festive excitement as Sokhiev nearly matches Mravinsky’s manic tempos. What he doesn’t match is that conductor’s riveting intensity (admittedly, neither does anyone else). Still, Sokhiev’s reading nonetheless succeeds on its own terms, as an engaging, straightforward rendition.

Sokhiev shows even more flair in Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, producing a reading that brings out the music’s Russian feel and color even through its Ravelian dress. Sokhiev’s light-stepping Promenade suggests a relatively brisk stroll throughout the exhibit, while his emphasis on bold color and sharp rhythms draw sthe “viewer’s” attention irresistibly to the paintings.

The Toulouse Capitole Orchestra certainly has much to prove in repertoire that has been done so magnificently by virtuoso ensembles in Cleveland, Amsterdam, Chicago, Berlin, Vienna, and New York. That it holds its own in this company is due primarily to the earnestness and commitment of its players. The recorded sound has a somewhat dry, acoustically constricted (but not distorted) quality that, while certainly not audiophile, actually serves to increase the feeling of tension in the Tchaikovsky. In sum, a release worth investigating.
