Volume 2 of BIS's Sibelius Piano Trio series brings us incrementally closer to the familiar sound of the composer's better-known works. As he progressed, Sibelius made increasing use of thematic material that although original, bore characteristics of folk music--an element that, along with a potent rhythmic energy and an overall sunny disposition, makes much of the "Korpo" trio sound a good deal like Dvorák. The same goes for the slightly later "Lovisa" trio, though in this work there's a perceptible turn toward Sibelius' own emerging style. This is especially evident in the passionate finale, which brings to mind the composer's later Piano Quartet.

Most striking is the Allegro in D minor, its surging ostinato and dramatic impetus pre-echoing the opening movement of Sibelius' massive Kullervo Symphony. The smaller works (the Andantino and the two Allegrettos) are charming miniatures that employ alluring Nordic modalities, while the deceptively titled Alla marcia is a rousing rustic dance (featuring some stunningly percussive piano writing) that brings the program to an exhilarating close. Musicians Kuusisto, Ylönen, and Gräsbeck lavish on these early efforts the same commitment, virtuosity, and depth of feeling they brought to Sibelius' later masterpieces in Volume 1. Add to this BIS's vivid and vibrant recording, and you have one eminently enjoyable CD.
